Windows 10 Build 14942 is the seventh officially released Insider Preview Build of Windows 10 Creators Update. This Build was released to Windows Insiders in the Fast Ring on 2016-10-07.

New Features and Changes[]

  • Added the ability to hide the app list on the Start menu.
  • Refinements to gesture and click detection on precision touchpads.
  • Improved the PC upgrade experience, if a sysadmin has de-provisioned an app from the OS image, said provisioning status will be preserved after the upgrade and the app will not reinstall.
  • Introduced a new Windows Update icon.
  • Service hosts are split into seperate processes if you have more than 3.5GB of RAM.
  • Expanded the Active Hours range from 12 hours to 18 hours on the Pro, Enterprise and Education SKUs. The Home SKU continues to have 12 hours.
  • Added form field navigation to Narrator, detailed in the official release announcement.
  • Added an address bar in Registry Editor to make it easier to navigate.

Bugs[]

  • This build has a buggy OOBE. To bypass it, press SHIFT+F10 to open Command Prompt, open regedit, then navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OOBE and create a new DWORD here called SkipMachineOOBE and set its value to 1. Then go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State and set the ImageState value from IMAGE_STATE_UNDEPLOYABLE to IMAGE_STAGE_COMPLETE. After that, open lusrmgr.msc to create a new user by navigating to the Users option on the left pane, right-clicking "New User...", and typing your desired user name into the "User name" box. Make sure you untick "User must change password at next logon". After the user account is created, right click on it and click on the "Member Of" tab on the dialog that appears. Then click add. On the dialog box that appears, type "Administrators" into the text field that appears and click "Check Names". Then close out of lusrmgr.msc and then restart by typing shutdown /r.
  • Due to a then-recent platform change, Microsoft Edge may crash after opening, or when you type in the address bar or upon trying to open a new tab. To get it to work again, you must run a PowerShell script, which is detailed in the release announcement.
  • Touch scrolling is too sensitive in some apps, such as Microsoft Edge.
  • Service host seperation may make the IIS World Wide Web Publishing Service (W3Svc) unable to start successfully. To fix it, run the following two items from an elevated command prompt (or manually edit the registry):
    REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
    REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WAS /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
. After rebooting, the W3Svc and WAS services now share a service host process.
